Biren Shome

Born & Early Life
Born in 1948 at Amlapara, Jamalpur until he completed his high school education in 1964. At the school he was taught drawing by Rabi Dutta, a friend of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. He received his first award for drawing when he was in class four, which was probably decisive of what he would be in his life.
Education
He obtained the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Dhaka in 1969.
Career
While he was a freedom fighter he also worked as a designer in the Directorate of Press, Publicity, Information and Broadcasting at Mujibnagar in 1971. He was the chief Artist at the Bangladesh National Herbarium, Ministry of Environment and Forest, until his retirement in 2006. Biren Shome as a person is confident, uncompromising, diligent and fearless, but it is the romantic optimism that supersedes all his characteristics and is subconsciously distilled through all his works.
Awards
Over the years Biren Shome has been honored with many awards. Some of the key awards he received are:
  • 1962: 1st prize in Water Colour — Inter District Art exhibition
  • 1966: 1st prize in Water Colour — Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts, University of Dhaka 1999: Honorable Award from Saju Art Gallery
  • 1999: Shilpacharya Zoinul Abedin Gold Medel
  • 2002: Jatiya Grontho Kendra Award for best cover design

Others
Biren Shome is versatile. He has produced two-dimensional works of art in almost all conceivable media (oil, acrylic, water color, etching, acquaint, pastel. line drawing etc.) including terracotta relief. He is one of our foremost graphic and book cover designers and exhibited 500 of his cover designs in 1998. His interest in female figures, vegetal forms, landscape. abstraction. color has taken many turns.
